Living in Las Vegas for 20 years, I’ve had the chance to visit many of the incredible hotel pools that dot this desert oasis. One of my personal favorites? Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino. Whether you’re a local like me or visiting from out of town, it offers something special for everyone looking to cool off and relax. Mandalay Bay Resort pool area is legendary, and after years of visiting and experiencing what it offers, I can confidently say that it’s one of the best in town.

Mandalay Bay Beach: A Tropical Paradise

Mandalay Bay Beach is the heart of the resort’s pool scene. Spread across 11 acres, it’s like stepping into a tropical paradise, complete with a wave pool, lazy river, and more than 2,700 tons of real sand.

The Wave Pool

The wave pool at Mandalay Bay is an impressive 1.6-million-gallon tank that creates waves up to six feet tall. It’s one of the few wave pools in Las Vegas, making it a rare treat if you love the feel of ocean waves without having to leave the desert.

  • Best time to visit: Go early in the day to avoid the midday rush and secure a prime spot. The waves start at regular intervals, and it’s best enjoyed when the crowd is lighter.
  • Safety first: Life jackets are available and highly recommended for smaller children or weak swimmers. With six-foot waves, it can get a little rough.
  • Sunscreen is essential: Being out in the water means you’ll be exposed to a lot of sun. Make sure to reapply sunscreen often, especially after being in the water.
  • Wave intervals: The waves are scheduled, so you can plan other activities around them. Watch the posted schedule to time your swims for when the waves are rolling.
  • Stay hydrated: There’s nothing like the desert sun and a day at the pool to dehydrate you. Make sure to bring water or grab a drink from the nearby bar to stay refreshed.

The Lazy River

If waves aren’t your thing, the lazy river offers a more relaxed experience. This 3,000-foot-long loop of gentle currents is perfect for those who want to float along and soak up the sun without any effort.

  • Bring your own float: While inner tubes are available for rent, bringing your own is a smart way to save a few bucks.
  • Keep your cool: The lazy river can get crowded in the afternoon, but mornings and late afternoons are quieter. The water is also refreshingly cool, which is perfect for hot days.
  • Shaded areas: There are shaded portions along the lazy river, but these get snatched up quickly. If you’re heat-sensitive, stake your claim early.
  • Secure your belongings: Since the lazy river runs continuously, make sure you leave your valuables in a locker or with someone in your group. The last thing you want is to lose something while floating!
  • Fun for all ages: This is a family-friendly feature, so expect to see a mix of people—from children to adults—enjoying the gentle float.

Real Sand Beach

Mandalay Bay Beach is famous for its real sand beach, which stretches along the wave pool. It’s perfect for building sandcastles, sunbathing, or just getting that beachside vibe without leaving Vegas.

  • Footwear is key: Sand in the middle of the desert can get hot—really hot. Make sure to bring flip-flops or sandals to protect your feet while walking around.
  • Prime sunbathing spots: The sand areas are perfect for sunbathing, but it’s competitive. Head out early to snag a spot close to the water for a seamless transition from sand to waves.
  • Sandcastle building: If you’ve got kids, they’ll love playing in the sand. Pack a small sandcastle kit to keep them entertained.
  • Avoid the rush: Midday sees a large influx of guests. To avoid the crowds, try to plan your sand time for the early morning or late afternoon.
  • Rinse stations: Be aware of the rinse-off stations around the pool area, especially if you’re heading back to your hotel room. Sand can get everywhere, and rinsing off helps keep your room sand-free.

Kid-Friendly Activities: Keeping the Little Ones Entertained

While Mandalay Bay is a great spot for adults, it’s also extremely family-friendly, offering activities for kids of all ages.

Kid-Friendly Pools and Play Areas

  • Shallow areas: The wave pool has shallow sections perfect for younger kids to splash around safely.
  • Children’s beach: With plenty of soft sand to play in, this is a great spot for kids to build sandcastles and enjoy some beach fun.
  • Lazy river floats: Children love the gentle currents of the lazy river, so make sure to pack a float or rent one onsite.
  • Supervised play: If parents need a break, check out the hotel’s supervised play areas or schedule some time at the Kids Quest, a fun play zone with interactive activities for children.

Shark Reef Aquarium

  • Interactive exhibits: The Shark Reef Aquarium offers hands-on experiences that kids will love, such as touch pools and feeding shows.
  • Educational experiences: While fun, the aquarium also provides an educational aspect with its focus on marine life and conservation.
  • Discounted tickets: Sometimes, pool-goers can get discounted entry to the Shark Reef. Check with your concierge or ticket office for deals.

Private Cabanas: Your Own Slice of Paradise

Mandalay Bay offers private cabanas for rent if you’re looking for a more exclusive experience. These cabanas provide shade, comfort, and privacy—perfect for groups or those who just want a little more luxury.

The VIP Experience

Cabanas at Mandalay Bay come equipped with lounge chairs, mini-fridges, TVs, and personalized service. Renting a cabana elevates your pool day from casual to VIP.

  • Book in advance: Cabanas tend to book up fast, especially during peak season. It’s best to reserve yours a week or more in advance.
  • Split the cost: If you’re visiting with a group, splitting the cost of a cabana can make it more affordable while giving everyone a comfortable space to hang out.
  • Bring your essentials: Even though the cabanas come well-stocked, bring your personal items like sunscreen, hats, and towels. You’ll want to ensure you have everything you need for a full day by the pool.
  • Order food and drinks: One of the best perks of having a cabana is poolside service. You can order food and drinks directly to your cabana without waiting in line.
  • Great for families: Cabanas provide a shaded space for young children or older family members who might need a break from the sun, making it a great option for families.

Locations Matter

There are several cabana locations to choose from, depending on your preference. Some are near the wave pool, while others are more secluded, offering privacy and tranquility.

  • Wave pool proximity: If you’re looking for easy access to the wave pool, choose a cabana nearby. However, be aware that this area is typically noisier due to the crowd.
  • Secluded spots: For a quieter experience, opt for a cabana farther from the main pool area. These tend to be more relaxing and offer a more private atmosphere.
  • Lazy river access: If you’re a fan of the lazy river, consider booking a cabana near its entrance so you can hop on and off the river with ease.
  • Family-friendly zones: Some cabanas are located near family-friendly pools, making them a great choice for those with kids.
  • Adult-only areas: There are also cabanas available in the adult-only pool areas, perfect for guests seeking a more mature, serene environment.

The Moorea Beach Club: Adults-Only Luxury

For guests looking for an elevated experience, the Moorea Beach Club is an adults-only, European-style pool area where you can enjoy a more sophisticated pool day.

Exclusive Amenities

The Moorea Beach Club offers amenities like cushioned lounge chairs, poolside massage services, and an overall quieter, more relaxed atmosphere.

  • Dress code: While the Moorea Beach Club is a European-style pool, this means that tops are optional for women. Keep this in mind if you’re visiting with a group or have certain preferences.
  • Rent a daybed: If a cabana feels like too much but you still want a bit of luxury, the daybeds at Moorea are a fantastic option. They’re plush, comfortable, and offer more space than regular loungers.
  • Access fees: Unlike the general pool area, the Moorea Beach Club does have an access fee. It’s well worth it for the exclusivity and luxury, but be prepared for the additional cost.
  • Drink menu: Moorea has an extensive cocktail menu, perfect for sipping while relaxing in the sun. I recommend trying their signature mojito—it’s refreshing and perfectly balanced.
  • Less crowded: Since it’s adults-only and comes with a fee, the Moorea Beach Club is significantly less crowded than the main pool area. It’s a great place to unwind in peace.

Dining Options: Poolside and Nearby

One of the unique features of the Moorea Beach Club is the availability of poolside massages. There’s something incredibly relaxing about getting a massage with the sound of water in the background.

  • Book early: Just like the cabanas, poolside massages can fill up quickly. It’s best to book your session as soon as possible.
  • Short and sweet: Most of the massages offered are shorter in length—think 20 to 30 minutes—so they won’t take up your entire day but still leave you feeling refreshed.
  • Perfect for stress relief: If you’re in Vegas for a stressful event or conference, this is a great way to unwind and reset.
  • Shade is a bonus: Massages are offered in shaded areas, so you can enjoy the experience without baking in the sun.
  • Complement with a cocktail: After your massage, grab a refreshing drink and spend some time lounging to let the relaxation really sink in.

Daylight Beach Club: The Ultimate Party Pool

If you’re looking for something a bit more energetic, Daylight Beach Club at Mandalay Bay offers a high-energy pool party experience with live DJs, cocktails, and a lively atmosphere.

Party Vibes

Daylight Beach Club is where the party is at. It’s an adults-only pool area that frequently hosts concerts, celebrity DJs, and events throughout the summer.

  • Arrive early: The pool party scene starts early and gets packed fast. If you want to grab a good spot or enjoy the atmosphere before it gets too crowded, arrive when the club opens.
  • Reserve a daybed: Just like the Moorea Beach Club, daybeds and cabanas are available at Daylight. If you’re planning to spend all day partying, having a home base is crucial.
  • Dress to impress: This is a party pool, so expect to see people dressed in their best swimwear. Bring something that’s both stylish and comfortable for dancing and lounging.
  • Stay hydrated: It’s easy to get caught up in the party, but make sure to drink water throughout the day. The desert heat and alcohol don’t mix well without proper hydration.
  • Check the event schedule: Daylight Beach Club often hosts big-name DJs and performers, so check the event calendar before you go to see if someone you like is playing.
